Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton (Harper, February 25) Quite frankly, it was high time this memoir made its way across the pond. Dolly Alderton is one half of the excellent and very popular podcast The High Low, which covers news and culture (both high and low, hence the name). Shes also a successful journalist, but she didnt always have her life together. This is the story of her somewhat wild 20s and how her friendships saved and helped redeem her. Im never really sure about memoirs written by people younger than, say, 40, but this one is worth your time, in part because it has a really satisfying narrative arc â€" watching young, lost Dolly find her way and learn about whats really important in life is very moving.   It also has a fun structure: essays about various stages of her life are mixed with recipes, lists of what Dolly knew about love at different ages, satirical emails about the realities of being a young woman, and more. Its firmly anchored in British culture but the themes are universal.   By turns touching, sad, and funny , its really insightful and well written. Highly recommended.

Differentiated instruction is a concept that has gained in popularity over the past few years. The goal of differentiated instruction is to maximize learning success for all students. This type of instruction provides a variety of different ways for students to take in information and make sense of ideas (Hall, 2002). In order to encourage struggling writers to include all of this information they could write a list instead of whole sentences. In addition, they could include illustrations to help them get their point across. The idea behind the standard (Students use writing as a tool for learning, inquiry, and research) is that students get the opportunity to practice their writing skills. For a struggling writer, simply writing a few words would meet that objective. In addition, students are also required to write a letter to their animal. For struggling writers this could include just one sentence and a picture. Another option would be to have students glue a picture of their animal to a piece of paper and thank their animal for what it provides to humans. Tier II includes students learning at grade level. These students must complete the objective according to grade level so they will be required to include three complete sentences in their letter to their animal. They will also include information about their day in their letter. These students will be expected to use proper capitalization and punctuation as well. Tier III includes students performing above grade level. Often these students are not challenged enough in the classroom so certain modifications need to be made to ensure that they are learning. To this end, these students can write a complete story about their trip to the farm including a beginning, middle and end. They could also create a poster telling why their animal is the best animal on the farm. These activities, in addition to required assignments, will provide high achieving students with the chance to further their writing skills through extended activities. In order to best serve each student they must be placed in the appropriate tier. Students of the same age are not all alike when it comes to learning (Tomlinson, 2001). Therefore, careful consideration must be made when choosing the best tier for each student. In differentiated instruction, commonalities among students are noted but differences are also addressed as well (Tomlinson, 2001). Realizing the differences is what allows a teacher to maximize educational success for all students regardless of ability level. Each tier allows students to process and internalize information based on their specific skill level (Tomlinson, 2001). This type of division promotes classroom learning by all students. Students will be placed in tiers based on their writing abilities. Students who struggle to write complete sentences, form individual letters or incorporate capitalization and punctuation will be placed in Tier I. These students will enhance their skill level in these areas by focusing on fewer sentences but more time spent on creating a correct sentence. Students who are performing at grade level based on writing skills will be placed in Tier II. These students will display the ability to write complete sentences using capitalization and punctuation and will also be able to write legibly in order to get their point across. Finally, students who are performing above grade level will be placed in Tier III. These students will show remarkable ability to quickly write more than three complete and correct sentences. They will show higher levels of thinking in their writing. The lesson will be considered successful when all students have correct written work to show for their time. Regardless of ability level, all students will write, based on their individual skills, correct sentences. Tier I students will write one complete and correct sentence that shows improvement in capitalization and punctuation just as Tier II students will write three sentences. Tier III students will show higher levels of learning through writing using paragraphs. It doesn’t matter how many sentences each student writes, but it does matter if they can show what they have learned about farm animals through the writing of clear and concise sentences. Rudeness in America essays In my point of view, lack of education on proper behavior and good ethics is the main reason for increasing rudeness in our civilized and educated country. Therefore, the young generation in America doesnt even know the difference between rudeness and kindness. When my family and I moved to U.S. eight years ago, we had to deal with all kinds of rudeness and discrimination the first few years. It seemed like we were hated just for not talking to anybody and for dressing differently. Little kids would call us different names right in front of their parents, and would tell us to go back to Russia even though we came from Ukraine. However their folks, instead of telling them that such behavior is impolite, would just laugh with their kids encouraging them to do it again. Teenagers would kick our apartment door in the middle of the night and then would burst with laughter watching my dad in his pajamas and barefooted, chasing one of them. Even adults, who seem to have some life experience and basic knowledge of proper behavior, would act rudely by parking their cars in our parking space knowing that we wouldnt call the towing company due to a language problem. These and many other examples show how rudeness and even violence can be passed from generation to generation. As a result, rising population who never been taught differently, take this kind of rude behavior for granted thinking that this is the only way to live and survive. They adjust themselves to this kind of lifestyle passing it every day to the people around them, therefore the effects of that could be seen instantly and in a long term. Needle Blight Tree Disease - Prevention and Control This group of blight diseases - including Diplodia, Dothistroma and brown spot - attacks conifers (mostly pines) by girdling needles and killing branch tips. These needle blights are caused by the fungus, Dothistroma pini mostly on western pines and Scirrhia acicola on longleaf and Scots pine needles. Needle damage can cause major commercial and ornamental damage to conifers in North America significantly affecting the nursery and Christmas tree industries. Infected needles often fall from the tree creating a symptomatic scorched, denuded look. The blight usually results in dramatic browning and dropping of the foliage beginning on the lower branches. It rarely attacks upper branches on conifers so the tree might not immediately die. Diseased Needle Identification Early symptoms of a blighted needle would be deep-green bands and yellow and tan spots on needles. This deep green color banding is short-lived. The spots and bands quickly turn brown to reddish brown during the summer months. These bands tend to be brighter red and more numerous on pines in California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, where this disease is often referred to as the red band disease. Needles may develop extensive leaf browning within several weeks of the first appearance of symptoms. Infection is typically most severe in the lower crown. Infected second-year needles usually drop before infected current-year needles. Needles that become infected the year they emerge often are not shed until late summer the following year. Successive years of severe needle infection can result in tree death. In most cases, the disease makes pines in landscapes unsightly and pines in Christmas tree plantings unmarketable. Prevention Repeated annual cycles of disease infection can result in dead limbs and eventual loss of any meaningful ornamental or commercial value of the conifer. Breaking this infection cycle has to happen to effectively stop the fungus. Brown spot needle blight in longleaf pine is controlled using fire. The use of genetic resistant pine strains or clones has been identified in Austrian, ponderosa, and Monterey pines. Seeds from Eastern Europe have shown high resistance and are currently used to produce Austrian pines for Great Plains plantings. Sources of ponderosa pine seed have been identified as having high resistance and collected for planting in endemic areas. Control High-value nursery and Christmas tree plantings can benefit from chemical fungal control. Early detection is important and high dollar trees may be sprayed as a preventative measure in locations where the fungus is active. A copper fungicide spray program, repeated over several years, will eventually allow new, undamaged needles and branch tips to replace the diseased ones. Chemical applications should begin in spring where the first spray protects the previous years needles and the second spray protects the current years needles. When symptoms of the diseases have disappeared, you can discontinue spraying. Ask your local extension agent for recommended chemicals.

Physics You can find a law of physics in everything that you do. It does not matter if you are doing complex scientific experiments, working as a laborer in a field, or enjoying your favorite pastime, you are involved in putting the laws of physics to work. I will try to demonstrate this as I discuss the laws of physics that are involved in my favorite pastime, which is steer wrestling. The art of steer wrestling is complex and simple all at the same time. To start, let’s define what exactly steer wrestling is. Steer wrestling is a rodeo event that is also known as bull dogging. This is the event where there are two mounted cowboys that run along the side of a steer. When they get close to the steer the cowboy on the left hand side climbs off onto the back of the steer, grabbing the steer by the horns. Keep in mind if you will that both the cowboys on the horses and the steer are running at full speeds while this dismounting is taking place. Once the cowboy has the steer by the horns, the cowboy must change the steer’s direction and wrestle him to the ground. Since this is a rodeo event and a competition, you have to do all of the above as fast as you can. Steer wrestling is a timed event that is started when the steer leaves the chute, and ends when the steer is lying on its side with all four feet facing the same direction. Now that we know what steer wrestling is, let’s tie it in with a couple of things that deal with physics. As I already mentioned above, the first step is crawling off of a horse that is running full speed onto the back of a cow that is traveling at its full speed as well. An experiment is a scientific procedure used to test a hypothesis, answer a question, or prove a fact. Two common types of experiments are simple experiments and controlled experiments. Then, there are simple controlled experiments and more complex controlled experiments. Simple Experiment Although the phrase simple experiment is tossed around to refer to any easy experiment, its actually a specific type of experiment. Usually, a simple experiment answers a What would happen if...? cause-and-effect type of question. Example: You wonder whether a plant grows better if you mist it with water. You get a sense of how the plant is growing without being misted and then compare this with growth after you start misting it. Why Conduct a Simple Experiment?Simple experiments usually provide quick answers. They can be used to design more complex experiments, typically requiring fewer resources. Sometimes simple experiments are the only type of experiment available, especially if only one sample exists. We conduct simple experiments all the time. We ask and answers questions like, Will this shampoo work better than the one I use?, Is it okay to use margarine instead of butter in this recipe?, If I mix these two colors, what will I get? Controlled Experiment Controlled experiments have two groups of subjects. One group is the experimental group and it is exposed to your test. The other group is the control group, which is not exposed to the test. There are several methods of conducting a controlled experiment, but a simple controlled experiment is the most common. The simple controlled experiment has just the two groups: one exposed to the experimental condition and one not-exposed to it. Example: You want to know whether a plant grows better if you mist it with water. You grow two plants. One you mist with water (your experimental group) and the other you dont mist with water (your control group). Why Conduct a Controlled Experiment?The controlled experiment is considered a better experiment because it is harder for other factors to influence your results, which could lead you to draw an incorrect conclusion. Parts of an Experiment Experiments, no matter how simple or complex, share key factors in common. HypothesisA hypothesis is a prediction of what you expect will happen in an experiment. Its easier to analyze your data and draw a conclusion if you phrase the hypothesis as an If-Then or cause and effect statement. For example, a hypothesis might be, Watering plants with cold coffee will make them grow faster. or Drinking cola after eating Mentos will cause your stomach to explode. You can test either of these hypotheses and gather conclusive data to support or discard a hypothesis.The null hypothesis or no-difference hypothesis is especially useful because it can be used to disprove a hypothesis.
